Unit Questions:

1. What were some of the early land animals of Earth?

2. What kinds of animals live in which environments?
3. What will happen to the land and animals if humans hurt and destroy the environments?

4. How can artists help you see animals in a new way?
5. How can we help prevent humans from hurting the land and animals?

6. How could humans hurting Earth also affect the future of humans and animals?

7. What are some reasons animals become extinct?

Day One

1. Ask students what they think happened after land rose above water and plants grew on the land.

2. Also ask why is it important for plants to grow for humans and animals?

3. Ask students Unit Q #1-above

4. Talk about early creatures and ask Unit Q #7 above.

5. Discuss extinction that helped the dinosaurs and then extinction hurt the dinosaurs.  Could it happen again?

6. Students tell how dinosaurs are different than animals today while looking through the Dinosaur pop up books listed under Animals on the Resource page (or other informational dinosaur books you like)

Process

7. Demonstrate using clay techniques of rolling, and pinching and subtracting to make the shapes like the dinosaur in your picture.

8. Students pick a dinosaur picture and make it in 2D or 3D on their board, which ever way they do it. Document pictures of their work

Day Two

1. Review what students know about how the Earth has changed over time, and possible reasons for extinction.  Have each student brainstorm to list their favorite animals.  Each student can choose one animal that is not yet chosen by others to make a habitat for at home with their families. (Send parent note home, asking that the habitats come in next week on art day).

2. Then read the story Wump World by Bill Peet . Ask students what is going to happen throughout the story, how they would feel if they were the the Wumps, how the Wumps felt and about the lesson of the story.

3. Students then look at the series called "Domesticated' by Amy Stein and discuss the human/ animal interactions in the work and how it is different than most of the images we see of people and animals.

4. Discuss Unit Q #3,4,5 and 6- above.

5. Use a Venn diagram to show the potential look of the future on Earth- good and bad.

6. Students draw their version of the future of Earth (do writing connect with classroom teacher, for students to explain what actions affect the way they see the future).

Day Three

1. Students describe and share the habitats they made at home with their families. Share ideas about Unit Q #2.

2. Students who need to finish art from the previous class can work while we look at art work by Maya Lin and discuss what influences of nature students see in her art.

3. We then look at the What is Missing website, and view videos and photos of animals and habitats endangered around the world. Share more ideas about Unit Q #2.

4. Students share the most important things they have learned over the past few weeks and recall and tie in questions from the Ocean and Land Lessons.

5. Students brainstorm in their heads ways that they can help the Earth and make a drawing that shows what they plan to do to help the Earth.  Students can do more than one drawing and this process will go into

Day Four

Students will share

1. Their drawing of how they plan to help

2. Their favorite artist from the unit and why

3. Their favorite part of all the lessons and why

Introduction:

This lesson looks at Earth's animals past, present and future, in relationship to humans and habitats. It will look at reasons for extinction and possible ways to prevent the loss of more species and why this is important. We will look at artists and how they can contribute to helping the Earth's animals.

~Students will model in clay-dinosaurs that once ruled the land.
~Seeing some examples of hurt to the Earth in Wump World and previously in The Great Kapok Tree, students consider and depict possible ways the Earth may look in the future verbally in Venn Diagrams and then in artworks

~Students will show they understand habitats and environments of Earth by creating one and telling about it.
~Witnessing other artists in video and picture showing their love and support of the nature of Earth, students will brainstorm ways that Art and artists can help the Earth stay healthy.
~Students show understanding of how they can help the Earth by drawing their 'Help the Earth' actions
